Building and Defining Community Leadership: Learn to Become a Better Leader

Community_Circle_at_OUR_EcovillageBeing a community leader may sound like a meager role, but that’s far from the truth. While responsibilities for a community leader may be regulated to one neighborhood or district, being a community leader is an important designation, begging that one individual represent the common interests of an entire community.

Community leadership is so much more than an ability to understand that there are needs that must be met within a community. Community leadership requires that leaders tap into a sense of foresight and actively pursue resources that could help to embolden one’s own community. One doesn’t have to run for office or even be given an official title in order to demonstrate a personal commitment to one’s community. Instead, one becomes a community leader by testifying they’re interested in improving their community, they have something to contribute, and/or they’re tired of waiting around for others to do what needs to be done. They appoint themselves community leaders, and take on responsibilities while recruiting like-minded individuals who also want to provoke change.

In order to be an effective community leader, one has to possess a number of desirable qualities, including an eagerness to learn and adapt, as well as a firm understanding of self-awareness, empathy, honesty, integrity, dedication, and service. Additionally, interpersonal skills, being a forward-thinker, motivation and intelligence are also quintessential. The ability to create positive change is made easier by individuals who have a keen ability to build on strengths, to gain and offer support, as well as those who demonstrate a willingness to listen, interpret other viewpoints, facilitate discussions, and exhibit trustworthiness. Encouraging volunteerism, communication, and competency are ways to spark community-wide leadership efforts.

High levels of intellectual, social and emotional intelligence can incite change. If lacking resources and/or support, reach out to the local municipality office, church, community center, school, or library. Stay committed to doing effective research online, and share the responsibility by recruiting a group youngsters to help actualize efforts. Enlist family members, church members and/or teachers, anyone who will support anti-drug initiatives, community weight-loss efforts, the development of a task force, or the protest against the demolition of a local landmark.

Building healthy communities shouldn’t just be an abstract goal, it should be a community-wide objective that can be achieved through partnerships, skills, volunteering, networks, and knowledge. There have been classic and innovative approaches to leadership, which has helped to enhance communities and equip community members. Diverse ideas can be found by looking to diverse community leaders. This means that women, young people, people of color, low-income individuals, disabled individuals, and immigrants should step forward to offer their ideas, which will help to ensure a sense of belongingness and rounded viewpoints.

Find a project that’s personally significant and go for it! Don’t forget to listen, learn, recruit, research, and teach!

Entrepreneurship & Millennials

17705922131_239a237550_o

Over the years I have challenged myself in many different ways – spiritually, creatively and economically. I have thrived at any chance I can expand my skill sets, help other people and learn a new business strategy or two. As the years passed, I knew I wanted to take my knowledge and skill sets and apply it to my own business. Grabbing any chance to mold and shape my own future and intertwine it in with my faith has been a rewarding journey. It has not been as easy one though. I have been challenged in many different aspects, but as I put my best foot forward, I have seen prosperity. As someone who thrives on the success of others, I wanted to help in any way that I could.

Millennials are often referred to as the entrepreneur generation as more universities and schools offer entrepreneurship education. The ironic part about the label is that Millennials are not starting new businesses. As many of them graduated into a recession and don’t have the ability to pay off student loan debt, it’s no surprise a countless number of them are hesitant in putting everything into a startup. However, as an economy, we need these start ups to boost the workforce and create jobs.

In 2025, 75% of the American workers will be made up of Millennials. We need them to rise up and not be afraid to take a risk into entrepreneurship. We need them to realize that going to entrepreneurship will not be learned in a classroom, but by trial and error. Inevitably a number of them will fail as the numbers are against them; only 10% of them will go on to success. It’s taking the lessons learned from the field and applying them to the bigger picture. After all, Henry Ford failed plenty before launching Ford Auto.

Philippians 3:13-14 NIV Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

However, we cannot put the blame entirely on the Millennials. The generation before them had challenges that were vastly different. With less financial burdens, work experience required and prepared to launch a startup. We need to reach out and help the next generation of leaders gain the confidence to dive into the world of entrepreneurship. Realistically, no one is going to work with you forever, but as we mold and build the confidence of our younger counterparts, we can guarantee great work and the success of generations after us.

3 Important Reasons Why You Should Be Volunteering

Since the beginning of the new century, volunteering has been on the decline. Business Insider released a study stating that 24 percent of Americans spent any of their time during the 2015 year giving back to the community. This has been the lowest percentage of people since 2001. In my own personal life, I thrive at any opportunity to give back to the people. Spending time to help fulfill the lives of others has given me a sense of purpose and confirmed that I was put on this earth to assist in other’s success.

Everyday I encourage people to try to give back to their own communities. The success and well being of a community is dependent on its citizens, and volunteering is an enriching way to contribute a positive foundation towards it. I have listed three reasons below why you should be volunteering.

Volunteering is wonderful for society

Countless businesses that are mission-driven succeed by the secure tie with volunteers. Generally these companies, such as museums and faith driven organizations, rely heavier on their volunteers than their full time employees. The donated time is dedicated to drive the goals and mission of the specific business. Often these companies assist where government programing ceases. The volunteers assist to better the lives of the people who need service. Programs, such as food or clothing drives, would not be successful without volunteers.

Volunteering provides one with a sense of purpose

Volunteering helps people develop opportunities that fulfill a sense of purpose. One of the complaints people state is that there isn’t enough time in their days. When you volunteer, you are surrounding an hour or more of time for unpaid work. As a result of this, you will focus on volunteering for a cause that you are passionate about. This reason will ensure that you have taken steps in helping your favorite cause. Volunteering has been proven to give people a healthier and happier life as an added bonus.

Volunteering is valuable for your career

If the above reasons are not enough to motivate you to support your community, volunteering looks great on a resume and can help you to earn more money. How does this happen, you might be asking? As you volunteer, you will be exposed to people you may have never interacted with before. If there is a specific field you are looking to transition into, volunteering within that industry is a great way to make new networking connections. Not only will you be positioning yourself as a leader, you will develop new social connections.

Remember, volunteering does not require a huge time commitment. You can volunteer only an hour a week if that’s what your schedule allows.
